Wetzel Original Karlsbader Oblaten are a delicate Central European wafer specialty with a tradition stretching back more than two centuries. Each large, round Oblate consists of two paper-thin, crisp wafers surrounding a delicate filling of caramelized sugar, butter, roasted hazelnuts and almonds, lightly seasoned with cinnamon and vanilla. The result is wonderfully crisp and light, with a buttery, nutty sweetness that makes Karlsbader Oblaten quite different from ordinary waffles or cookies.
Karlsbader Oblaten originated as a specialty of the famous Bohemian spa town Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary), where visitors traditionally enjoyed the thin wafers during their stay and took them home as gifts. Wetzel continues this tradition in Germany, producing its classic Oblaten in the traditional large round format—approximately 18 cm (7 inches) in diameter. Enjoy them as they are, or warm an Oblate briefly to bring out the aroma of butter, nuts and spices. They are especially delicious with coffee or tea and make an elegant alternative to cake for an afternoon Kaffeeklatsch.
About the Producer: Wetzel Karlsbader Oblaten- und Waffelfabrik is a family-owned German bakery in Dillingen an der Donau, Bavaria. Founded in 1948, Wetzel has specialized in traditional Karlsbader Oblaten for more than 70 years. Founder Marlene Wetzel-Hackspacher had trained as a confectioner in Marienbad, helping preserve the Bohemian spa-wafer tradition after settling in Germany.
